Mumbai’s MMRDA Inks Pact with UK-Based Forum to Build Tech-Oriented Inclusive Smart City in MMR
The World Smart Cities Forum expertise will be used by MMRDA for building a growth centre that incorporates innovation to deliver substantial economic growth and quality of life to its residents

To further strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi government’s Smart City Mission, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced an MoU with the World Smart Cities Forum (WSCF), United Kingdom, at the World Economic Forum, Davos 2024, for a tech-oriented, inclusive Smart City in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

With this collaboration, the WSCF’s expertise will be used by the MMRDA for nurturing a growth centre that incorporates innovation to deliver substantial economic growth and quality of life to its residents in the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) Influence Area.

While welcoming the collaboration, Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde said, “The MoU between MMRDA and WSCF solidifies our unwavering commitment to the prosperous future of the region. The best practices that are globally enforced by WSCF will now grace the doorsteps of the MMR, aiding the fulfilment of our dream for the development of the smart growth centre. This collaboration will catalyse economic growth in the surrounding regions through global investments, making a humongous contribution to the economic welfare of our prestigious nation”.

According to the MOU, areas of mutual cooperation, includes the establishment of the master plan to remodel the MMR into an energy-independent region. Moreover, the master plan formulates strategic directives for the deployment of eco-friendly technologies to incorporate the brand new smart city with sustainability and efficiency.

Designing infrastructure on the basis of tech-oriented smart home technology will also be pursued through the collaboration of both parties. These promising directives of mutual cooperation will allow MMRDA and WSCF to achieve their strategic objectives for smart and sustainable development in addition to establishing futuristic cities that are resilient to climate change. This endeavour will promote the transfer of knowledge between both sides, letting MMRDA and WSCF demonstrate the prowess of best practices in the global arena.

Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, told News18, “The MoU fuels our drive to aid the digital empowerment and sustainable future of the MMR. Moreover, the region is bound to gain efficiency and resilience to climate change through our knowledge-sharing initiatives”.
