Bollywood superstars often take to social media to express their views on matters of society. They not only use their social platforms to share gorgeous looks from photoshoots but also to speak up and spread awareness for issues they deem important. On Tuesday, October 17, the Supreme Court of India delivered its judgment on the same-sex marriage equality case. Ahead of the judgement, several Bollywood celebrities took to social media to express their views.

Sonam Kapoor, who often takes to Instagram for social advocacy, shared several news articles from the hearing on the social media platform. She took to her Instagram story to share several quotes from Chief Justice of India (CJI), DY Chandrachud from the hearing. In one of the posts shared by Sonam, the CJI was quoted as saying, “Right to enter union can’t be restricted on basis of sexual orientation.” Another post read, “Law cannot assume that only heterosexual couples can be good parents.”

Dia Mirza and Bhumi Pednekar also took to their Instagram stories to share news articles about the verdict. Bhumi also added, “Equality for all because love is love.” She also added the song Hum Rang Hai to her story. The song is from her film Badhaai Do, in which Bhumi plays a queer character.

Bhumi’s Thank You For Coming co-star Sushant Divgikr aka Rani KoHEnoor spoke to India Times ahead of the verdict and said, “I think equal marriage rights are very important. It is extremely integral to the fact that it sanctions the relationship between two consenting individual adults in this democracy of India.”

As for the verdict, the Supreme Court in its judgement said that whether marriage equality is legalised is something parliament must decide on as it is not within the court’s purview to create new laws.
