India Passes G20 Presidency to Brazil, A Look At How Presidencies Are Transferred

As the ‘historic’ G20 Summit came to an end, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday handed over the customary gavel of the G20 chair to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, marking the ceremonial transfer.

The current host also proposed a virtual summit by November to take stock of initiatives taken during the Indian Presidency.

Prime Minister Modi extended full support to Brazil and expressed confidence that its presidency will take forward the shared goals of the G20 bloc.

“India passes the gavel to Brazil. We have unwavering faith that they will lead with dedication, vision and will further global unity as well as prosperity,” Modi said.

Let’s see the process of  G20 Presidency getting transferred 

Brazil will formally assume the G20 Presidency on December 1 this year.

The presidency will be transferred on the night of November 30, when the passwords of all domain and sites would be handed over to Brazil.

Post this, Brazil will be responsible for controlling websites, social media platforms and all domains of the G20.

Apart from this, the Indian government is planning a P20 ( Parliament 20) on October 14 and 15 tentatively in the New Parliament Building where delegates from G20 countries will participate.  This is to showcase parliamentary democracy of India.

India will also have a virtual session which PM Modi has announced on Saturday, and it is planning to create a digital archive of the entire summit.

The next Summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024.

What did Brazil say?

Addressing the closing ceremony of the G20 Summit here, Lula said the bloc was not interested in a “divided G20” and the challenges of the day could be faced only through joint action.

“We need peace and cooperation instead of conflict,” he said soon after Prime Minister Modi passed on the gavel to him.
