Nawaz Modi, the estranged wife of Raymond MD Gautam Singhania, has for the first time after their separation accused the industrialist of “kicking and punching” her and their daughter. She even claimed that a renowned businessman’s family came to her rescue.
In an exclusive interview with India Today, Nawaz Modi, who reportedly demanded 75 per cent of Singhania’s fortune as a divorce settlement, said that her injuries were so severe that the hospital she went to, told her that she may have internal bleeding.
“If there are clots forming, those could end up in the arteries going to your brain or to your heart. You could have a stroke or a heart attack. You are critical and need to be in ICU. Sometimes a rib may be broken, and if it punctures the lung, double jeopardy,” she was quoted as saying.
Elaborating on the incident of violence, Nawaz Modi said, “The first incident happened on the 10th of September morning where Gautam beat up, smashed up, kicked, and punched his minor daughter Niharika and myself for something which felt like about 15 minutes…unrelentingly.”
“This was around 5:00 in the morning, after his birthday party which was on the 9th of September. Even my two daughters had been present with some friends. He suddenly left the scene of the attack and disappeared. I could only imagine that he had gone to get his guns or weapons,” she added.
“I dragged my daughter into safety to another room. She went to get towels to support my back. I have had two hernia surgeries – one was during the time of my pregnancy and the other was because I had an ectopic pregnancy and had a fallopian tube removed, which resulted in another hernia. He knew that, and still flung me around the room several times. He was just going all out for Niharika and me, and we were just trying to protect each other,” Nawaz was quoted as saying.
She claimed that the trigger was her bathroom which Singhania wanted to use when she was using it. Nawaz said that there were multiple other bathrooms in their 39-storey tower but he was adamant on using the same bathroom.
When asked how did she handle the assault, Nawaz Modi said that her daughter called up the police and she called up her friend Ananya Goenka. They feared that cops won’t come as “Gautam would have managed things around”.
As she had thought “Gautam did stop the cops from coming”, but it was then that a few members of a top businessman’s family jumped in (through their contacts) and they made sure that the police reached the house, Nawaz claimed.
She said that when she went to the hospital all her friends found out about the domestic violence. “Once you are a domestic violence case, the police have to come back and review your report. More so if you fall into a particular category of grievous injury. He had broken by S3 – my third sacrum bone, which holds the upper body erect. The treatment is to be horizontal for many months. These don’t heal in a hurry. But for me, that was impossible, given my circumstances. The number of days I had to stay in the ICU put me in the grievous injury category,” Nawaz Modi was quoted by India Today.
The industrialist, aged 58, and Nawaz Modi, who is the daughter of solicitor Nadar Modi, tied the knot in 1999 after an eight-year courtship. Singhania last week announced separation from Nawaz, saying the two have decided to pursue different paths.
In a statement, Singhania expressed his desire to uphold his family’s dignity for the sake of his two daughters and refrained from making further comments, urging respect for his privacy.
The public revelation of the couple’s discord initially gained attention when videos surfaced of Nawaz Modi being denied entry to a company Diwali party. Shortly afterward, Singhania announced their separation on social media.
Recent reports suggested that the two parties were engaged in negotiations. Nawaz Modi has reportedly demanded 75% of his USD 1.4 billion net worth for herself and their two daughters in a family settlement following their separation.
While Singhania has tentatively agreed, he has proposed creating a family trust where he would be the sole managing trustee, a term Nawaz finds unacceptable, according to the report. Singhania’s net worth is reported to be over Rs 11,000 crore.
