Once again, today, many mobile users in India received an emergency alert from the government. The alert was sent at around 11:35 with a flash message. It had an emergency tone for all the Android and iPhone devices. Many took to social media platforms and bombarded posts asking as to if there is any need to be worried. “These emergency alert messages are creepy, loud and hella irritating!!!!” wrote an ‘X’ user while posting a screenshot. Another person wrote, “What are these messages about! I just received #EmergencyAlertSystem message, why? Quote text: Emergency alert: Extreme.”

Everyone seems to be extremely puzzled and confused as to what these texts are about. But is there a need to be worried? Let’s find out.

The tests are a result of the Indian government aggressively testing its yet-to-release emergency alerts feature. It is not just today that people received these texts. Many users in the Delhi-NCR region also received similar texts on September 15.

The message reads, “This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent through Cell Broadcasting System by Department of Telecommunication, Government of India. Please ignore this message as no action is required from your end. This message has been sent to TEST Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by National Disaster Management Authority. It aims to enhance public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies.”

As per the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), these alerts will be sent and tested on a regular basis. This is being done to ensure that the mobile operators and the cellular infrastructure are well versed with handling emergency broadcasts.
