The Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the World University Rankings 2024 in which as many as 91 Indian institutes have secured a place. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore secured the top spot among Indian universities. It has been placed between 201-250 rank overall.
IISc Bangalore is followed by Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences. These universities have been ranked between 501-600. Meanwhile, several Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) continued its boycott of the rankings for the fourth consecutive year.
The US is the most-represented country overall, with 169 institutions, and also the most-represented in the top 200 with 56 institutions. India is now the fourth most-represented nation with 91 institutions, overtaking China which has 86 institutes being represented in the rankings.

THE World University Rankings 2024: Oxford University Secures Rank 1 Overall
On the other hand, Oxford University has secured rank 1 in the THE World University Rankings 2024, followed by Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in second and third places respectively. Harvard University has secured rank 4 and Cambridge University has been placed at the fifth position.
“The University of Oxford tops the ranking for the eighth year in a row, but others in the top five have seen shifts in their ranks. Stanford University moves up to second place, pushing Harvard University down to fourth,” the official website read. MIT has climbed up two places to third this year. Cambridge University slipped to fifth place, after being in joint third place last year.

“The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 include 1,904 universities across 108 countries and regions. This year’s ranking analysed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally. Overall, we collected 411,789 datapoints from more than 2,673 institutions that submitted data,” the website added.
