Ujjwala Scheme Gets Big Boost; Govt Approves Rs 1650 Cr For New LPG Connections
Ujjwala scheme was launched on May 01, 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The union cabinet on Wednesday approved Rs 1650 crore subsidy for new LPG connection under Ujjwala scheme. Approval has been given to provide 75 lakh new connections.

Recently, the government announced that it will provide an additional 75 lakh Ujjwala connections, which will take the total PMUY beneficiaries to 10.35 crores.

In August, the cabinet gave additional subsidy under the Ujjwala scheme. The additional subsidy has been pegged at Rs 200, which takes total subsidy to Rs 400 per cylinder for PMUY beneficiaries.

For the Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries, the price drop of an LPG cylinder is Rs 400 — Rs 200 as price cut and Rs 200 as existing subsidy.

In May 2016, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG), introduced the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ (PMUY) as a flagship scheme with an objective to make clean cooking fuel such as LPG available to the rural and deprived households which were otherwise using traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal, cow-dung cakes etc.

Usage of traditional cooking fuels had detrimental impacts on the health of rural women as well as on the environment.

The scheme was launched on May 01, 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
