Raha: BJP leader L K Advani on Wednesday asked voters in Assam to see that their franchise did not give power to the corrupt, but to honest people who work for them and their state's welfare.
"Voting is a sacred right given to you by the Constitution. Use it judiciously to elect only honest and corruption-free candidates," Advani said addressing an election rally in Raha.
Asserting that problems of poverty, unemployment, price rise and insurgency remained since Independence, Advani said the Centre had been embroiled in corruption scandals that included the Rs 1, 72,000-crore 2G spectrum scam, Rs 1,000-crore CWG and the Adarsh Housing scam in Mumbai.
"We wanted to discuss these issues in the winter session of Parliament demanding the formation of a JPC, but the government was unwilling to do so and no business was conducted for the entire session for the first time," the former deputy prime minister said.
"But when the CAG, Supreme Court, the Opposition in Parliament and people supported us in our fight against corruption, only then the government agreed to a JPC," he said.
He also urged the Opposition to see how the Lok Pal Bill could be passed in the next Parliament session for which 72-year-old social activist Anna Hazare was on a fast-unto-death since Tuesday.
He appealed to people to vote for the BJP for the welfare and development of Assam and the nation as a whole. Referring to India's victory in the cricket World Cup, Advani said, "The celebrations took place across the country because when the honor of India is boosted, its national pride also is boosted."
