Ajit Pawar-led NCP on Tuesday announced its first candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The party announced the candidature of Sunil Tatkare from the Raigad constituency. The announcement has brought an end to speculation of Tatkare being considered for Rajya Sabha. There was also speculation that the Raigad ticket may be given to his daughter and Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare. The Raigad seat is likely to witness a fight between the NCP and Shiv Sena UBT in the upcoming polls.
The Raigad Lok Sabha constituency consists of six state Assembly constituencies, out of which, Dapoli and Guhagar fall in the Ratnagiri district. Three constituencies are with Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, one each with Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena UBT, Ajit Pawar-led NCP and BJP. Fighting the Lok Sabha election from Raigad, Tatkare has support in four constituencies.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Tatkare got 47.49% vote share and a total of 4,86,968 votes. He had defeated former cabinet minister and Shiv Sena UBT leader Anant Geete in the previous election.
Tatkare, as a cabinet minister, has handled finance & planning, water resources, energy, urban development, food & civil supplies under various chief ministers in the Maharashtra government. He was earlier considered a close aide of Sharad Pawar, but later joined forces with Ajit Pawar and was appointed as State President of Ajit Pawar’s NCP.
Meanwhile, a crucial meeting of NCP MPs and MLAs took place in Pune on Tuesday. Sources say that discussion over Raigad, Satara, Shirur and Baramati seats happened during the meeting. As per sources, Ajit Pawar’s NCP is also demanding Dharashiv, Nasik and Parbhani seats. Sources suggest that if NCP gets the Nasik Lok Sabha seat as part of the Mahayuti alliance, Pawar may ask senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal to contest from the constituency. “99% work of seat-sharing of Mahayuti has been done. The formal announcement will happen in Mumbai on the March 28 in the press conference of Mahayuti,” said Ajit Pawar in Pune.
