New Delhi: Assam Governor PB Acharya has come under fire for reportedly saying that 'Hindustan is for Hindus'. He said that the name of a single Bangladeshi should not be in the National Register for Citizens.
After facing flak for his remarks, Acharya clarified that he meant that persecuted Hindus anywhere have the right to seek shelter in India.
Acharya said, "Any Hindu persecuted in Bangladesh has right to come to India, why just Hindus but anyone. I didn't mean Hindustan is for Hindus only, persecuted Hindus anywhere have a right to seek shelter here."
Acharya made the controversial comments during a book launch in reply to a question on the Centre's notification of allowing religious minorities from Pakistan and Bangladesh fleeing persecution to seek shelter in India.
Hitting out at Acharya, Janata Dal United MP KC Tyagi said, "His statements are against the principal of Constitution. On 125th Ambedkar Jayanti, I wish Assam governor didn't talk about such unconstitutional stuff."
Backing Tyagi, Congress leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi said, "Someone who is a governor is making such statements. The Centre should think of consequences of making someone a governor with RSS ideology."
Acharya also reportedly expressed concern over Assam and other northeast states being under threat from Islamic terror.
