New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti on Tuesday defended a controversial remark he made on women's safety saying that it was "not a big deal". Bharti, while speaking on women's safety, had said that "beautiful women" would be able to travel at midnight if the Delhi Police was brought under the AAP government.

He, however, said that he had been clearly misunderstood.

"When we were kids, we were told that if beautiful women could roam around from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, only then could we call India safe. I only said that there should be a secure environment. It's a proverb I used. I don't think it's a big deal," Bharti said.

The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, slammed him and accused AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for failing to restrain his party leaders from making careless remarks.
