New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who is scheduled to host Narendra Modi government's second anniversary event.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said Prime Minister Modi sharing of dais with Bachchan at the May 26 event would send out a wrong signal to agencies probing the Panama Papers leak on offshore tax evasion.
"Amitabh Bachchan hosting the government's two-year anniversary event sends wrong signal to agencies probing Panama Papers. How can the Prime Minister share the dais with a person like this," Surjewala said.
"Amitabh Bachchan doing a PR for the government of india does not send the right message," said Congress leader Shehzad Poonawalla.
The Bharatiya Janata Party was quick to hit back at the Congress. "Congress should not feel agitated over Bachchan's name. People love Amitabh Bachchan more than they love Rahul Gandhi," BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said.
His party colleague and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy said, " What Congress has said about Amitabh Bacchan is shocking. Sonia faces the National Herald case, she also shares the stage with so many people."
Bachchan clarified on Twitter he is not hosting the event. "This is misinformation, not hosting ..only doing a small segment on 'beti bachao, beti padhao'," he tweeted .
Abhishek Bachchan also stood by his father Amitabh is not hosting a political event. "He is just encouraging educating girl child. He is not hosting a political event," Abhishek said.
The government is organising the event -- 'Zara Muskura Do' (Smile Please) -- which will have several performances and programmes highlighting its "achievements". Various schemes and programmes, particularly Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Digital India and Rural Electrification, will be highlighted during the show.
