India not safe if Congress, BJP win polls: Karat
Karat says Left will fight against communal forces and also anti-people Congress.

New Delhi: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat says future of India is not good if a Central Government headed by the two combination - Congress-led UPA and BJP-led NDA - comes to power in the next Lok Sabha Elections.

"We will fight against communal forces and also anti-people Congress," Karat said in New Delhi on Monday.

Karat, whose strident opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal and the subsequent withdrawal of support by the Left Front to the United Progressive Alliance Government led to the July 22 trust vote, said that their long terms goal is to have a third alternative.

He, however, added that if the General Election comes soon then the Third Front will have to be put on hold.

He once again appealed to the Manmohan Singh government to reconsider the deal.

"The provisions of Hyde Act and other conditionalities are part of the deal. It's not late as deal is yet to be signed. The government can still reconsider," the 56-year-old CPI-M leader said.

He also hoped the Left Front would be able to forge some understanding with Bahujan Samaj Party before the upcoming General elections.

"Our electoral performance in Lok Sabha will depend on Kerala and withdrawal of support to UPA will be no facto," he added.

Karat’s biggest grouse against the UPA Government has been the Indo-US nuclear deal, which the US House of Representatives passed on Sunday, ending a three-decade ban on US nuclear trade with India.

The Nuclear Deal Bill passed the House by a margin of 298-117, and the Democrats hope to bring it to a vote within days when it goes to US Senate for approval, congressional aides said.

While there was bi-partisan support for the Bill, a considerable number of Democrats voted against the Bill.

While House Republicans voted 178-10, the widely split Democrats — who control the US Senate — voted 120-107.
