Bangalore: With an eye on next year's assembly polls, Congress on Saturday asked partymen in Karnataka to take on the ruling BJP, highlighting its "failure" in utilising central funds under the Employment Guarantee Scheme and non-submission of utilisation certificate.
Addressing Congress workers on his visit to the city, Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh asked them to launch a campaign against the BJP government seeking a "genuine account" of the funds received from the Centre.
He also asked partymen to utilise the situation "thrown" up by "infighting-ridden" BJP to its advantage. "Congress party is in an advantageous position, as the state government has neither submitted any audit report nor submitted its utilisation certificate. In spite of my department requesting the Karnataka Government on several occasions, the government failed to adhere to the rules", he said.
Rejecting BJP Government's allegations that the Centre has meted out step motherly treatment to it, he said the UPA Govenment never ignored development and has done its best by releasing funds to the state under various schemes.
The minister told Congress workers to make the drinking water scheme implemented by the UPA its poll plank and added the Centre allotted Rs 857 crore under Rural Drinking Water Scheme to Karnataka to supply drinking water in as many as 30,000 villages with 500 population.
He said the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme has transformed the lives of the poor in rural areas particularly women and dalits by raising their standard of living.
