Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma, who had termed Dadri lynching as an accident, on Friday asserted that he was not politicising the issue. Sharma visited the family of the victim and assured that members of the minority community would remain safe there.

Expressing grief over the incident, the Union Minister said, "I met the mother of victim. This is a very saddening event...this is just against our civilisation."

Sharma rejected claims that Dadri incident was a planned one, reiterating that it was "an accident". He pointed that people of different faith had been living in the area since long, calling for an investigation into the incident.

"There is unity among the villagers, I assure minorities will be safe here...I have talked to the Home Minister and they have asked for a report on it," said Sharma.

On Thursday, the Union Minister had said that Dadri lynching was an accident, and should not be given a communal colour.

"This (incident) should be considered an accident without giving any communal colour to it," Union Minister Sharma, who is the MP from the area, told reporters in Delhi, adding "I feel this incident occurred due to some misunderstanding and the law should truthfully act against whoever is responsible for it."

Iqlakh was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son Danish was critically injured by a 200-strong mob which barged into their house on Monday night following rumours that the family had consumed beef. Cow slaughter is banned in Uttar Pradesh. With tension gripping the area, the ruling Samajwadi Party hit out at BJP over Iqlakh's killing, accusing it of deliberately inciting violence ahead of 2017 Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh as part of efforts to polarise voters.
