New Delhi: Hardline Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam was released by Jammu and Kashmir government without informing or consulting the Centre, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Modi made the revelation while intervening in the discussion on Alam's release which saw the opposition unitedly targeting the Centre for what it called was an "anti-national" decision of the Jammu and Kashmir government.
Modi assured opposition that there is no compromise on the unity of the nation and the government will take necessary action soon.
Targeting opposition parties in the Lok Sabha, Modi said, "I share the anguish of the House. But don't teach us patriotism."
A defensive government came out in full strength to firefight after the controversial decision by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to release Alam rocked Parliament on Monday.
While replying to the opposition charge, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he was not satisfied with the report he had received from the state department on the issue.
"We are not satisfied with the report received from the Jammu and Kashmir state department. We have sought some clarifications," he added.
Opposition MPs were adamant on their demand of answer from Modi which led to brief adjournment of both the Houses.
Alam was the mastermind behind the 2010 protests in which hundreds of people lost their lives. He was later arrested on the orders of the then Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah.
