New Delhi: The Insurance Bill deadlock is likely to rock Parliament on Thursday with the Opposition digging in its heels. The Congress remains firm that the bill be sent to a select committee.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called a meeting with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the bill. Sources say that the government is considering sending the bill to a select committee, seeking a report in a time-bound manner.
On Wednesday, an all-party meeting called to resolve the deadlock had been called off. The government had initiated back channel talks with parties to find a solution.
The government cannot call for a joint session of Parliament until the Bill is either defeated or amended in the Rajya Sabha.
"This government is subverting democracy. Parliament is in session. They are stuck with FDI in Insurance. They can't get it through in the Rajya Sabha. So what are they doing, using the excuse of saying that it is an executive decision to bring 100 per cent FDI in railways and 49 per cent in defence," Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien said.
