Bengaluru: Union minister Prakash Javadekar’s prediction of a ‘political dhamaka’ in Karnataka has renewed speculation of the BJP’s alleged attempts to topple the KD Kumaraswamy government in the state.
Speaking to a news channel, Javadekar had claimed that the “unholy alliance” between the JD(S) and Congress was set to fall soon. “We were the single-largest party in Karnataka, but fell short of forming the government by just seven seats. The JD(S) and Congress are known for opportunistic politics and can never give a stable government in the state,” he said.
Another Union minister, DV Sadananda Gowda, who is MP from Karnataka, echoed his cabinet colleague’s views. "The government would collapse because of its internal rifts. We will have to wait and see if the upcoming Belagavi session is completed," the MP, who represents Bengaluru North, said, indicating a chaotic winter session of the Assembly.
Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council and BJP leader Kota Srinivas Poojary fanned rumours, claiming that state cabinet minister Ramesh Jarkiholi was likely to switch sides. "Ramesh Jarkiholi is mentally away from the current government. He has talked about his pain. Whoever comes to the BJP, we will welcome them".
Poojary's claim was bolstered by Jarkiholi’s absence from a cabinet meeting held in Vidhan Souda on Wednesday.
Rubbishing the BJP’s forecast, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said, “This earthquake by the BJP has been happening for the past six months. It’s only about making noise. Our government is strong as a rock. This topic is dead.”
Congress strongman and minister DK Shivkumar agreed with the CM. "BJP leaders are frustrated. Javadekar’s statement suggests that they are indulging in horse-trading. We have given our word to CM Kumaraswamy that the coalition government will complete its full term.”
