New Delhi: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday chanted the mantra of aam aadmi, the Congress mascot, while presenting the last Budget before the Lok Sabha elections.
In an obvious reference to the election symbol of the Congress, he spoke more than once that people will recognise the 'hand' when they would soon be called upon to exercise their right to choose the next government.
"I have no doubt when the time comes, the people will recognise the hand that made it all possible," he said, amid thumping of desks by the members from the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition.
To drive home the point further, he commended the Interim Budget to the House by concluding his speech with a remark "the hand that alone can help our nation on the road to peace and prosperity."
Apparently referring to the way Congress was given the mandate by the people several times, Mukherjee said "the Indian people have repeatedly shown that they can be relied upon to make sound decisions to secure the nation's future."
Mukherjee's bid to bat for the Congress through his invoking of the aam admi and reference to the 'hand' did not go down well with opposition BJP members who alleged that the common man has suffered a lot in the last few years due to price rise.
