Amritsar: The contestants of the Amritsar Parliamentary seat carried on with their mudslinging act during their campaigning on Wednesday.

Both Surinder Singla of the Congress and cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) wooed voters with promises of more development projects in the city.

Singla wooed voters by promising more developmental projects in the city as the Congress was running the government in the Centre.

He promised a railway line connecting Qadian with the main line. He also promised a sports stadium and liberal central grants for the area.

Elsewhere, Sindhu promised to carry forward the pending works started by him during his last tenure as MP.

But then both started with their mudslinging act, freely resorting to un-constitutional languages while addressing each other.

While Singla didn’t think twice before addressing Sidhu as “Bhonka” (one who barks), Sidhu accused Singla of being an agent of Reliance and other big corporations.

“I don’t want to comment on Singla as he is the agent of reliance and other big companies and become the symbol of corruption,” said Sidhu.

“Singla has left his native place of Bathinda and come here. He will be made a 'pingla' here and sent back,” he said.

Sidhu blamed the Congress for violence in the Beas region. He also took up the case of the farmers in Barnala, accusing Chief Minister Capt. Amrinder Singh of wasting public money on Vikas Yatra ahead of the elections.

Public money worth crores of rupees was wasted on the yatra, a publicity stunt, he said.

Both the candidates are touring the area extensively to consolidate their position for the Parliamentary seat.

Batala and Quadian Assembly constituencies of Gurdaspur are part of the Amritsar parliamentary seat.
