The decision was taken in view of an ongoing controversy in the club.

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday returned her membership of the Press Club of India following a controversy.

She was in the midst of a row after she received the honorary membership of the 50-year-old club by a group of office bearers a few days before they were removed by an Extraordinary General Body Meeting (EGM) for alleged financial irregularities.

"Sonia Gandhi is giving up her honorary membership of the Press Club of India with immediate effect in view of the ongoing controversy in the PCI," AICC General Secretary in charge of media, Janardhan Dwivedi said in a letter to the PCI.

AICC sources said that the membership card presented to her was also attached with the letter of Dwivedi.

The office bearers, led by ousted General Secretary Pushpendra Kulshresthra, visited 10, Janpath residence of Gandhi and presented the membership card after getting her signature on the membership form.

There were allegations that the office bearers had taken a photograph posing with Gandhi and pasted them on the walls of the Press Club a few days before the scheduled meeting of the EGM which was specially convened to discuss alleged corruption and financial irregularities.

The EGM held last Saturday removed the office-bearers and appointed a seven-member interim panel led by PP Balachandran to run the club and probe the allegations of their financial frauds.
