Guwahati: The swearing-in ceremony of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sarbananda Sonowal as Assam Chief Minister will be held at the Khanapara Veterinary College playground on Tuesday.
This will be the first BJP-led government in Assam. BJP and its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) created history by winning 86 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
Party leaders claimed that the swearing-in ceremony is expected to be a gala affair. Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with senior union ministers and chief ministers of all BJP-ruled states are likely to attend the ceremony. BJP President Amit Shah will also be present in the ceremony.
Sources said Sonowal will take oath along with 11 ministers and the event is likely to be witnessed by thousands of people. Giant screens have been installed in many cities, towns and villages of Assam so that people in remote areas can also watch the event.
The state police and paramilitary forces have made elaborate arrangements in and around the venue to secure the VVIPs. The area has been cordoned off and CCTV cameras installed at vital locations.
Thousands of party workers worked hard for our victory in Assam. This is not just an electoral victory but it is a victory of our ideology, said BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav.
Sonowal won from the Majuli seat defeating sitting Congress MLA Rajib Lochan Pegu by a margin of 18,923 votes.
His started his political journey in 1992 when he became president of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU). Sonowal entered the Lok Sabha in 2004, defeating Union minister Ranee Narah of Congress from Lakhimpur constituency.
In 2011, he quit AGP to join BJP. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP led by Sonowal in the state won seven seats in the state
