The film, released on December 23, 2006, continues to resonate with audiences for its realistic portrayal of societal challenges. In a post on his official X account, Blessy expressed his gratitude for the enduring relevance of Palunku, a poignant exploration of the consequences of excessive aspirations leading to suffering.
Blessy’s X account, @DirectorBlessy, featured a heartfelt message: “With #Palunku completing 17 years since its release, we revisit the tale that shook the core of our souls. A realistic depiction of excess aspiration leading to agony, the movie’s theme remains relevant as a society still grapples with unfortunate incidents of physical abuse.” Accompanying the note was a one-minute clip showcasing a powerful scene featuring Mammootty, delivering a performance that resonates with viewers emotionally.

Palunku, directed by Blessy, boasts a cast that includes Mammootty, Nazriya Nazim, Lakshmi Sharma, Baby Nivedita, Jagathy Sreekumar, and Kottayam Santha. Notably, the film marked the debut of Lakshmi Sharma and Nazriya Nazim. Produced by Houli Pottoor under the Dream Team Productions banner, the film’s music was composed by Mohan Sithara. Most of the shooting took place in Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha, Kerala.
Mammootty’s portrayal of Monichan earned him the Best Actor award at the Kerala Film Critics Award, and he was also nominated for a National Award. Director Blessy, who made his filmmaking debut in 2004 with Kaazhcha, starring Mammootty, has consistently delivered impactful films. For Kaazhcha, Blessy received the Best Debut Director award at the Kerala State Film Awards, while Mammootty earned the Best Actor accolade.
Looking ahead, Blessy’s next project, titled The Goat Life, features Prithviraj Sukumaran. Produced by Blessy, Jimmy Jean-Louis, and Steven Adams under Visual Romance Image Makers, Jet Media Production, and Alta Global Media banners, the film is slated for release on April 10, 2024.
