'Candy Crush' Going Strong on Fifth Anniversary
'Candy Crush' Going Strong on Fifth Anniversary
Five years on from the release of King's pattern-matching game "Candy Crush Saga", it's still one of the top-grossing games on mobile phones.

Released to Facebook on April 12, 2012, then iOS and Android in November and December the same year, in 2017 "Candy Crush Saga" is hugely popular worldwide.

The level-based, confectionary-themed pattern matching distraction is a regular top ten fixture in highest grossing app charts for the US and Canada, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and South Africa. Though the game is free to play, players are invited to spend on various perks from $0.99 a pop.

"Candy Crush" is still holding its own on charts against more recent, battle-themed releases such as "Clash Royale," "Game of War," "Clash of Clans" and "Mobile Strike," as well streaming media apps from Netflix and Pandora Radio.

And it seems that the original is still the best. Subsequent releases followed in "Candy Crush Soda Saga" (2014) and "Candy Crush Jelly Saga" (2016) but seldom are either seen ahead of their parent in major app store regions.

"Soda Saga" bests vanilla "Candy Crush" in Japan, as a rare example, where both original and threequel are absent from the country's top 100 grocers and top free downloads.

There's only one other game from that era which has shown the same sort of staying power.

"Minecraft: Pocket Edition" released as a paid mobile download a year before "Candy Crush," in November 2011, and even now it's topping paid app charts on iOS and Android.
