'The Picasso of India' would have turned 100 today. To celebrate MF Husain's birth centenary, Google has posted a doodle on its home pages in nine countries around the world.
Husain was born on September 15, 1915 in Pandharpur, a Hindu pilgrimage town in Maharashtra and passed away on June 9, 2011 in London. He was on a self-imposed exile following a string of controversies surrounding some of his paintings.
The very mention of Husain brings the image of free spirited horses to the mind but the Google doodle has no horses galloping away. Instead there is a sombre looking Husain with folded arms holding a paintbrush on his right hand. Husain in the doodle doesn't look at you, but looks away, as if he is displeased with something.
The painting behind him symbolises (as is usually the case in Google doodles) the Google logo. It is a set of circles in Google colours and it looks familiar. That similarity isn't with a Husain painting (we do not usually associate Husain's works with geometric shapes) but with one of the many draft logos that designers at Google discarded while making the new logo for Google.
An image posted on the Google Design site announcing the new Google logo showed a number of draft logos and within it was the logo that we see on today's MF Husain doodle.
