The new budget tablet will be available starting September 30, with an option to buy a "six pack" of the devices at $250, with one free.

Amazon unveiled a major home electronics push, led by a $50 tablet computer and other devices aimed at budget-conscious, gadget-hungry consumers. The low-cost, seven-inch Fire tablet is part of an upgraded line being launched by the online retail giant. The low-cost tablet will operate on the newest version of the Fire OS operating system based on Android. The new budget tablet will be available starting September 30.

The 7-inch Fire tablet unveiled on Thursday marks Amazon's most aggressive attempt yet to undercut Apple, which has been the market leader since its first iPad went on sale five years ago.

The Fire tablet features a 7-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.

It is claimed to be two times more durable that the latest Apple iPad Air.

Amazon says the tablet can offer up to 7 hours of battery life.

Under its hood is a quad-core processor that consists of four 1.3 GHz cores.

The Fire tablet includes 8 GB of internal storage and offers free unlimited cloud storage for all Amazon content and photos taken with Fire devices. Users can also add a microSD card for up to 128 GB of additional storage.

Amazon is hoping that the low price of the new tablet will be so appealing that people will stock up on the devices and have them scattered around the house. As a prod, it plans to sell a six-pack of the 7-inch Fire tablets for the price of five, or $250.

The Fire features a 2 megapixel rear-facing camera and a front-facing VGA camera.

Amazon is counting on the new tablet's low price to encourage more people to buy a device that will hook them on watching video, reading books, playing games and shopping on a computer that's easy to carry wherever they go.
