As the preparations for the Ram Mandir are going on in full swing, cybercriminals have initiated a fresh campaign to exploit people through WhatsApp messages, offering free VIP entry to Ayodhya temple on January 22.
The initial messages that individuals are receiving include an APK (Android Application Package) file labelled as ‘Ram Janmabhoomi Grihsampark Abhiyan.APK’. Subsequently, the second message displayed on the screen encourages users to “Install Ram Janmabhoomi Grihsampark Abhiyan to get VIP access and share with Hindu… Jay Shree Ram…”
What is This Invitation?
Needless to say, neither the state or central government, the event organisers or the temple trust formed to address temple management in Ayodhya, are involved in this case. This is a new scam that specifically targets individuals eager to witness or enter the temple on the inauguration day.
Downloading such malicious APK files, which claim to provide entry into the temple on January 22, poses a significant threat. The potential harm such files can cause depends on the specific malware hidden within. Here are some common things malicious APKs might do:
– Stealing personal data: This includes login credentials, passwords, credit card numbers, contacts, browsing history, and even personal messages.
– Financial information: APKs can target banking apps and steal financial data like account numbers, transaction details and even intercept one-time passwords.
– Device location: Tracking your device’s location allows attackers to monitor your movements, and target you with personalised future attacks.
Additionally, such files can help attackers spy on targeted devices. Your activities on the phone can be secretly recorded, including typing, browsing, and even camera and microphone usage. The malware can crash apps, freeze your phone, or even wipe your data entirely.
Every keystroke you make can be logged, capturing sensitive information like passwords and messages. Similarly, your phone calls can be intercepted and recorded without your knowledge.
It is advisable to exercise caution when you come across such APKs that are distributed via third-party sources. If you receive such messages from an unknown sender, take prompt action by reporting and blocking the person, and file a cyber crime complaint without delay. Secondly, do not click on such links and avoid forwarding such messages to your contacts.
