In a tragic incident, a huge billboard in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar locality collapsed on Monday evening. This incident left as many as 14 people dead and injured over 74 others after a heavy rain and thunderstorms lashed the city. As per reports, the rains, accompanied by high winds, caused the 30 metre tall billboard to fall over a gas station in the suburb. Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra took to X (Formerly Twitter) on Tuesday and expressed his views, terming the incident ‘Unacceptable’. “14 dead. Om Shanti. 60 injured. From a billboard collapse. Unacceptable. And we’re a city trying to transform itself into a modern metropolis,” Mahindra wrote on X.

The post received mixed responses from online users. While some agreed with the industrialist, others said that calling for an investigation into the incident was a reactive decision. “It’s strange that the BMC didn’t take any suo moto cognizance of its illegal status when this billboard was registered in the Limca Book of Records for being the largest billboard in India last year. The families of the deceased will receive 5 lakhs, already announced by the Maha govt, as the price for human lives, and we’ll forget about the incident soon,” a user wrote. “Ordering a probe into all hoardings is a reactive action because of the anger else this could have been done before the tragedy,” another commented.

About The Incident:

CCTV footage from the area captured the metal structure tearing through the roofs of several cars before thudding on the ground. The hoarding was erected by Ego Media on a plot which has been leased to the Police Welfare Corporation by the Maharashtra government’s Police Housing Division, NDTV reported.

The rescue operation has started. The NDRF has dispatched two teams to assist in collaboration with the Mumbai Fire Brigade and other involved agencies. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site of the collapse and assured that his government would conduct a structural audit of all hoardings in the city. The CM had announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to all the families.
