It is not just another Monday for Mahindra Group chairperson Anand Mahindra. Often sharing Monday Motivation posts on X, the businessman took a distinct route today. He addressed a situation questioning his loyalty to his brand. It started when a social media user tried to call out the entrepreneur for “driving BMW and Mercedes cars instead of a Mahindra Thar”. He dropped a heartfelt clarification, highlighting his dedication to his brand and connection to its vehicles.
Rattan Dhillon, a self-proclaimed auto-enthusiast, in a post shared on September 1, questioned Mahindra’s advocacy for the “Made in India” initiative. Dhillon added a few pictures saying the businessman owned a range of luxury cars. The conversation continued after Autocar India Editor Hormazd Sorabjee joined, refuting claims that Mahindra owned any product other than his own.
Given Mr. Anand Mahindra’s strong advocacy for “Made in India,” why does he opt to drive BMW and Mercedes cars instead of a Mahindra Thar, which is built by his own company? @anandmahindra pic.twitter.com/aHl299W1DI— Rattan Dhillon (@ShivrattanDhil1) September 1, 2024
Hormzad, in a post on X said, “Have just witnessed the anatomy of fake news! How a blatant lie gets blind validation by moral grandstanders & then spreads! Scary how someone like @anandmahindra who has never owned any car (even privately) other than a Mahindra for the last 30+ years can get so easily maligned.”

On Monday, Anand Mahindra dropped a clarification post, listing down his vehicles including a Hindustan Motors Contessa which he was allotted by his company in 1991 to a Red Scorpio N. He even mentioned occasionally borrowing his wife’s silver XUV 7OO. The businessman wrote, “Since the Armada, I have NEVER owned or used any car of another brand. It is a matter of enormous pride for me to use a car built by our company.”
Hormazd, you have covered Mahindra since the time I joined the company. So you are in a unique position to call out this fabricated and fake story. Thank you.And for the record:

Addressing the image shared by Rattan Dhillon, he shared that the photo was clicked at the Monterey Car Week, during the launch of Mahindra’s Battista electric hypercar. He added that it was a classic vintage Cisitalia, designed by Pininfarina. FYI, Pininfarina is owned by Mahindra.
People extended support to the entrepreneur as one of the users commented, “Mahindra ji owns Mahindra cars but people love to spread random fake news.”

“I recall how, even in Rome, during the Automobili Pininfarina launch, there was a black XUV parked outside his hotel, used as his vehicle. Always one to walk the talk,” added another user in a post.
