Bhuj Eatery Brings a 'Chilling' Twist to Dabeli, Adds Ice Cream and Butter to 'Mix' it For Worst
Viral video shows Bhuj eatery serving 'Ice Cream Dabeli', a dish no one wanted to try.

When it comes to pushing the boundaries of culinary creativity, Gujarat has taken a bold leap with some unconventional food combinations making waves in recent times, sparking both curiosity and controversy. While the trend of turning bread and ice cream into ‘sweet’, ‘chilling’ sandwiches was somewhat manageable, a Bhuj eatery has now upped the ante with its latest creation – the ‘Ice Cream Dabeli’, which has ignited a storm of reactions online, but unfortunately, failed to tantalise the taste buds of true food enthusiasts.

The viral video, shared on Instagram by the food page @foodie_addicted_, showcases ‘Kutchi Bites’, an eatery in Bhuj, Gujarat, where they proudly present their unconventional take on the Dabeli. The process involves sandwiching two scoops of ice cream between the pav typically used for Dabeli, followed by sizzling on a hot tava with butter until it reaches a crispy perfection, topped off with a sprinkle of masala for an unexpected twist of flavours.

Take a Look:

While the authentic Dabeli from Gujarat is renowned for its spicy-sweet goodness, crafted from boiled potatoes infused with a special Dabeli masala, stuffed into a ladi pav (burger bun) and served with an array of tangy chutneys, this ice cream-infused concoction seems to have missed the mark among discerning foodies.

Social media commentators didn’t hold back their disappointment, with one user expressing, “First time I am not proud to call myself kutchi.” Another joined in, stating, “OG Dabeli: This is not our boy, he can’t be our boy,” while a third quipped, “This is NOT a dabeli. Just a fried pav with ice cream inside…Dabeli ka naam kharab mt kro!”

Meanwhile, this isn’t the first instance of the classic Dabeli undergoing a sweet (yet sour) transformation. In a previous culinary experiment in Vadodara, a man decided to give Dabeli a fruity twist by using Mango Dolly as the star ingredient. This unique popsicle, featuring mango ice with a vanilla ice cream filling, was incorporated into the dish by dipping bread slices in a mixture of coconut water, turmeric, and mustard seeds for a sweet kick. The bread pieces were then layered in a foil container, drenched in mango sauce, and adorned with slices of Mango Dolly.
