SUVs stranded in standing water, buses left abandoned on roadways, and airports submerged—this was the scene in the affluent city of Dubai after heavy rain caused widespread flooding. The UAE experienced record-breaking rainfall on Tuesday, April 16, the heaviest in the past 24 hours and surpassing anything documented since data collection began in 1949. The National Centre of Meteorology issued a red alert as the weather further deteriorated across the country, urging residents to remain ‘extremely vigilant’ in this situation.
However, amidst this scenario, Indians took the opportunity to mock the UAE’s poor management and infrastructure, which led to roads and everything else being submerged in water. The infamous Mumbai rains were brought into the discussion, with every Desi trying to troll the Arab country and suggesting they learn from Mumbai’s BMC on how to manage such situations.

“Looking at the Dubai rains, my respect increased for Mumbai’s BMC management,” said one user on ‘X’. Another joined in, “People troll Mumbai for poor drainage system during rains but now look at the most advanced city of the world, Dubai. It is facing heavy water logging due to rain. Hope everyone is safe there.” The third continued the jest, “UAE caused Artificial Rains but forgot to build the drains.”

However, many were quick to point out that Dubai doesn’t expect such heavy rains, unlike Mumbai, which is prone to them, and therefore officials need to prepare beforehand.

“Indians shaming Dubai for not building infra. On [a] per capita basis they have 100 times more infra than India. Prob Even more,” remarked one. “They are literally comparing Dubai to Mumbai…Bhai seedhi baat Mumbai expects that much rain. For Dubai it’s a one off incident and the city is not made for such heavy rains!” echoed another, while a third explained, “Dubai was not built for such heavy rains – rains that would flood most cities. A better analogy would be if it suddenly snowed heavily in Bombay, which was obviously not built to handle snow at all. Would people in snowy Oslo mock Bombay?”

Incorrect analogy. Dubai was not built for such heavy rains – rains that would flood most cities. A better analogy would be if it suddenly snowed heavily in Bombay, which was obviously not built to handle snow at all. Would people in snowy Oslo mock Bombay? https://t.co/bqNzEqZf0Z— Sanjiv Kapoor (@TheSanjivKapoor) April 16, 2024
Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that this extraordinary rainfall event in the UAE not only contributes to boosting the annual rainfall average but also fortifies the country’s groundwater reserves on the whole.
