A strange hotel in Zanzibar, Tanzania allows guests to sleep in an underwater room where fish and sea creatures swim past the windows. The Manta Resort is a luxury holiday retreat in the East African country, perfect for Brits who love the unusual and offbeat. The highlight of the stunning resort is its unique underwater suite, anchored in the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. The hotel features an underwater room surrounded by windows that offer fantastic views of fish, coral and sometimes even octopus.
The resort’s website states: “Anchored in an anomaly of the sea floor we call the blue hole, the floating underwater room tops almost anything. Sitting in a turquoise bubble and watching schools of reef fish swim by – sometimes in three or four layers of different species – is a truly heart-stopping yet awakening experience”.
The floating structure, a Swedish construction, offers three levels, above the water, clad in local hardwood, a lounge, a bathroom and below, a sunbed from which to gaze at the stars. Each of these is worthy of a story of its own. There’s a comfortable double bed, 360-degree views, cosy lighting and a sundeck for reading, sipping cocktails or jumping into the water that surrounds the luxury room. Other amenities include a fully stocked bar, lounge deck and room service.
The resort offers several other accommodation options if you don’t want to stay underwater. Spacious villas are nestled in the lush tropical gardens or are located right on the beach. The Manta Resort is located on the northern tip of Pemba Island, so it is secluded and far from the noise and hustle and bustle of Zanzibar’s larger areas. Zanzibar, with its white beaches and trendy bars and clubs, has been called the ‘new Magaluf’, but this underwater hotel is different from other holiday accommodations.
To stay in the underwater room, you will have to spend up to Rs 90,000 for one night where two people can stay in a room. Booking at the resort is only for a minimum of 3 days. Also, you will have to pay an additional Rs 3,700 which is considered as an Impact Contribution donation. This money will be used for the cleanliness of the environment and local people.
