‘Is She Ok?’ US Woman Questions 75% Minimum Tip At Nail Salon
The mother-of-two reportedly paid $21 for an eyebrow wax at the unidentified cosmetologist, according to the media outlet.

Tipping is a matter of preference in India, whereas it is a well-established and widely accepted culture in the US. A tip of at least 20% is customary in the US for meals, and at least $1 is tipped for drinks at bars. However, this gesture of gratitude has gone out of control in recent years since practically no payment transaction in the US is now completed without a request for a tip. A simple Google search will provide millions of articles denouncing the absurdity of this approach. Recently, a woman was horrified when her nail salon demanded a minimum 75% additional tip for beatification work.

Gaby LaCorte detailed the incident in a TikTok video. She was quoted by the NY Post stating, “Tipping culture in the United States has gotten out of control”.

The mother-of-two reportedly paid $21 for an eyebrow wax at the unidentified cosmetologist, according to the media outlet. But when she tried to leave a tip on the iPad and noticed that the amounts varied from 75% to 100%.

In other words, unless she chose the “custom” tip option, she would have to pay at least $36.75 in total.

LaCorte asked, referring to the cosmetologist, “Is she ok?”

Because it generally shows 15%, the influencer believes that many people clicked on the 75% option out of habit.

LaCorte said, “That really bothered me; I’m not going back to her.”

A Pew Research Centre survey from November 2023 stated that most Americans believe they are now requested to tip service providers more often than in the past.

Seven in ten American respondents (72%) believe that tipping is anticipated in more locations now than it was five years ago.

This conclusion is consistent with anecdotal reporting and has been nicknamed “tipflation.”

About two out of ten Americans (21%) believe it to be more of a preference, while 29% believe it to be more of a requirement. The majority (49%) state that it depends on the circumstance.

LaCorte’s incident, meanwhile, is a part of an ongoing trend known as “guilt tipping,” when customers are persuaded into leaving larger tips at fast-food restaurants, coffee shops, pizzerias, and other establishments with subpar customer service.
