Susan Zhuang, a New York City councilwoman, has been accused of biting a New York Police Department (NYPD) police officer during an ongoing protest. The protests are reportedly being held against the decision to establish a homeless shelter in the Bensonhurst neighbourhood in Brooklyn. The video of the incident has now been going viral. In the video, we can spot the councilwoman Zhuang, 38, reportedly sinking her teeth into an official’s arm. She can also be seen pushing against a police barricade.
According to the NYPD, Zhuang bit Officer Frank DiGiacomo, who is the Chief of Patrol, reports ABC7 New York. In the video, the injury sustained by DiGiacomo has a bite mark and blood oozing out of it.

After the incident had been caught on camera, it was soon circulated on X and prompted massive outrage from the viewers. One user commented, “That’s ridiculous. There needs to be real legal penalties for these assaults on our police. Too many people are getting away with it and not facing consequences.”

“What was the altercation all about? When there’s biting involved, humans begin to show their animalistic nature! NYC is cray cray,” wrote a person.

Zhuang now faces several charges, including that of assault, resisting arrest, blocking government actions, unlawful assembly, disorderly conduct and harassment. She was reportedly taken to the court on Wednesday evening and was later released without needing to post bail.
Reports also suggest that the NYPD was responsible for the protest getting violent. “Mistreatment by our NYPD, who I always support, must be stopped, AAPI hate and Asian hate in any form must end. I was approached from behind, two police officers handcuffed me, one police officer pulled my hair, and another officer grabbed my neck…the issue is not unique to myself, as many members in the Asian community have been subject to this excessive enforcement and mistreatment by our NYPD,” she told ABC7 New York.
