Italian supercar maker Ferrari has unveiled the 812 Superfast, which is the most powerful series production Ferrari yet. The car’s biggest attraction is its engine, which is a 6.5-litre V12 unit that makes 788.5 horsepower and 718 Nm of torque and comes mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. What this means is that the car is capable of going from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of almost 340 km/h.
It is a fast car and that’s not usually a difficult task for the Italian automaker to achieve but what’s special is that even in this day and age, Ferrari is using a V12 engine. With the ever increasing concerns over the pollution levels cars are often blamed for it and as a result, the emission norms keep getting stricter. This forces the automakers to ditch the 12-cylinder engines in favour of smaller V10 or V8 engines.
It could be one of the last supercars that are powered by a V12 because even Ferrari themselves have started using hybrid technologies, like in the Ferrari LaFerrari.
In terms of looks, the car appears to be an evolution of the design language used in the Ferrari F12 and looks sleek and aerodynamic. It is also reminiscent of the glorious 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB4.
The 812 Superfast is the first Ferrari to sport EPS (Electric Power Steering) which is used to fully exploit the potential of the car’s performance and, through the complete integration with all the electronic vehicle dynamics controls – including the latest 5.0 version of Ferrari’s Side Slip Control (SSC) – make its powerful performance easier to handle and even more thrilling to exploit.
The vehicle controls also feature, for the first time, the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system (PCV) which, following the experience gained with the F12tdf, features a further evolution of the software that improves the nimbleness of the handling and reduces the vehicle response times even further.
Full-LED headlights integrated into the design of the sculpted air intakes on the bonnet also emphasise that front muscle, integrating with, and wrapping around the front wheel arch. At the rear, it gets the symbolic four round taillights, which along with the horizontal lines, give the 812 Superfast a broad stance visually lowering both spoiler and cabin.
Two examples are the multi-functional frontal section, which incorporates a cluster of aerodynamic solutions including active flaps at the front of the underbody, and the rear flank which features an aerodynamic by-pass to increase downforce.
The car is being launched in a special new colour, Rosso Settanta, which marks the company’s 70th anniversary.
