Alka Yagnik is one of the promising singers of the 90s Bollywood era. Today, she is celebrating her 58th birthday anniversary. On this special occasion, let’s take a look at her professional as well as personal journey.
Known as the Melody Queen, she has sung over 2000 songs in 16 languages. She started her musical journey at the age of 14 years. Even today, she is regarded as a timeless music icon.
So far, Alka has delivered several hit songs in her career, including classics like Ek Do Teen from the movie Tezaab, Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai from Khal Nayak and Chamma Chamma from China Gate. Apart from singing, she has also judged various singing reality shows such as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs, Indian Idol and Superstar Singer.
Alka Yagnik has maintained a private life over the years. For almost three decades, she’s been in a long-distance marriage with Neeraj Kapoor, a businessman hailing from Shillong.
Alka shared a story about her first meeting with her husband, Neeraj. It happened in 1986 at the Delhi train station. Alka had come from Kolkata with her mom and Neeraj, who was the nephew of a family friend, was there to greet them. Alka mentioned that they both had different first impressions of each other.
Alka Yagnik and Neeraj Kapoor dated for two years before deciding to get married. In 1988, they spoke to their families about their relationship. But when they planned to marry, their families raised a few concerns. One concern was that they had different jobs. Another was the distance between them.
Despite all this, the duo got married in February 1989. Alka lived in Mumbai, while Neeraj stayed in Shillong. They had a daughter named Sayesha that year, who lived with Alka. Initially, the couple made efforts to be together.
Neeraj often travelled to Mumbai and Alka visited Shillong for a month every year. But this setup didn’t work out for long. Alka’s career kept her in Mumbai, while Neeraj, who was a businessman in Shillong, couldn’t move. This made it tough for the couple to spend time together.
Most of the time, Alka had to care for her child by herself. There was a time when the duo didn’t see each other for about 4 to 5 years. At that time, they both realised their love for each other.
Alka and Neeraj are happily married even though they live apart. Alka visits Shillong to see Neeraj and he comes to Mumbai to stay with her.
