Airlines announce fare hike
Major airlines, including Jet Airways, Air Sahara and the Indian, announced imposition of a revised fuel surcharge of Rs 500.

New Delhi: Major airlines, including Jet Airways, Air Sahara and the Indian, on Tuesday announced imposition of a revised fuel surcharge of Rs 500 from July 7, which would lead to an increase in fares of all classes on all domestic routes.

The airlines took the decision in view of the rising price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) by over Rs 900, taking the ATF prices to over a whopping Rs 41,000 a kilolitre.

Spokespersons for the three airlines said the revised fuel surcharge would be applicable on all tickets purchased within and outside India. For tickets issued outside India, the same would be converted into local currency by using the applicable exchange rate.

However, the surcharge would not be applicable on sale of tickets made on or before July 6. The Jet Airways spokesman said its Jet Privilege redemption tickets would be exempt from this fuel surcharge.

Public sector oil firms had on July 1 raised the jet fuel prices by about Rs 900 a kilolitre, or over two per cent, in step with firming up of international prices.

While the price in Delhi following the hike rose to Rs 41,303.58, in Kolkata it has become Rs 46,564.46. The price in Mumbai was Rs 42,731 and in Chennai Rs 43,940.32 a kilolitre.
