Battery recall hits Sony's profit
Sony Corp revised its net profit projection for the year until March 2007 to 80 billion yen from 130 billion yen.

Tokyo: Sony Corp revised its net profit projection for the year until March 2007 to 80 billion yen (about $673.72 million) from 130 billion yen, mainly because of the recent recall orders of problematic lithium-ion batteries for laptop computers, the company announced on Thursday.

Sony reduced its operating profit estimate to 50 billion yen from 130 billion yen but left its sales at 8.23 trillion yen unchanged from the year before.

The Japanese electronics company's downward estimate is caused by the battery recall cost, as well as a price reduction of its PlayStation 3 game console and production adjustments for the game devices.

Nearly 8 million batteries have been put on recall programmes since August by eight companies, including Sony, that have marketed laptop computers with Sony batteries.

Meanwhile, the number of Sony laptop batteries to be recalled worldwide will total 9.6 million, the company said on Thursday, after nearly every major laptop computer maker has asked customers to return the batteries due to the risk they may catch fire.

Friday's estimate comes hours after Sony Corp slashed its fiscal year profit forecasts due to the massive global battery recalls and price cuts in Japan for the next-generation PlayStation 3 video game console.
