Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has completed the tunnel work between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir station on the Golden Line of Tughlakabad-Aerocity Corridor. Under the fourth phase, an 865-meter-long tunnel was built on the Golden Line in five and a half months by a 97-meter-long TBM (tunnel boring machine). Two parallel circular tunnels are being constructed here for up-and-down movement.
The construction work of the Tughlakabad-Aerocity Corridor is expected to be completed by the year 2026. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot attended the ceremony held on the occasion of the completion of the tunnel work.
The new metro route on which this tunnel has been built between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir is being built between Aerocity and Tughlakabad. This line will connect Kashmiri Gate to the Raja Nahar Singh Corridor (Violet Line) with the Airport Express Line. There will be a total of 15 stations on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity route.
With the construction of the 23.62 km long Golden Route, the Delhi Metro will also reach those areas of South Delhi where there has been no metro till now. As part of the work of the fourth phase of Delhi Metro approved so far, 40.109 km of underground lines are being constructed. The Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor has a total underground section of 19.343 km.
97-meter-long tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to build the tunnel between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir station. After the completion of the 865-meter-long tunnel boring, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) came out at Chhatarpur Mandir station. The new tunnel has been constructed at a depth of about 15 meters. About 618 rings have been installed in the tunnel. Its diameter is 5.8 meters.
Delhi Metro has taken all necessary safety precautions while constructing the tunnel under the viaduct. Ground movements on the surrounding structures were monitored with highly sensitive equipment. With these measures, it was ensured that there was no compromise on safety anywhere.
