Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi, whose fate hangs in balance, on Friday maintained his decision on the fare hike.

New Delhi: Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi, whose fate hangs in balance, on Friday maintained his decision on the fare hike, saying it was in the best interest of the nation, adding he had full faith in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"The country and I have full faith in the PM. I will do and have done what's in the best interest of the nation and the Indian Railways," Trivedi said.

Trivedi earned the wrath of his party chief Mamata Banerjee for increasing passenger fares in the rail budget for 2012-13.

While Mamata wrote to the Prime Minister on March 14 seeking Trivedi's dismissal from the Cabinet and replacing him by Union Minister of State for Shipping and her trusted aide Mukul Roy, the Prime Minister had spoken to the Trinamool chief on Friday on the issue.

Trivedi, who had attended the Lok Sabha Question Hour on Thursday, also participated the Cabinet meeting on Friday.
