The 30-share index, Sensex gained another 50.44 points at 13,239.98 in first five minutes of trading.

New Delhi: Continuing its upward march for the sixth straight session, the stock market on Wednesday opened in green tracking the quiet Asian peers.

The benchmark BSE Sensex gained over 50 points in early trading on the back of buying by funds and retail investors.

The 30-share index, Sensex, which had gained 730 points in the past five sessions, gained another 50.44 points at 13,239.98 in first five minutes of trading.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stocks Exchange index Nifty was up by 11.50 points at 3,859.65.

Metal sector stocks led by Tata Steel were centre of brisk activity on funds buying, triggered by firming trends in base metals in the global markets.

Tata Steel stocks shot up Rs 13.40 at Rs 509 on increased buying funds as well as retail investors.

Other gainers were Sterlite Industries, Hindalco, Nalco, SAIL, Ranbaxy Lab, Reliance Communication and HDFC Ltd.

The strength on the domestic bourses was also attributed to firming trends in Asian markets.

Japan's Nikkei was up 0.08 per cent or 14.33 points at 17,679.02, Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.42 per cent or 86.01 points at 20,433.88, South Korea's Seoul Composite gained 1.12 per cent or 16.79 points at 1,515.95, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted surged 0.49 per cent or 39.43 points at 8,087.82 and Singapore's Straits Times advanced 0.04 per cent or 1.25 points at 3,423.87.
