Mumbai: It was a good close for markets as they ended in green with gains after opening with a sharp cut. The rise in Indian markets was despite some weak cues from global peers on account of the dim chances of Fed cutting rates going ahead. Sensex after breaching 15,000-mark closed near that level and nifty around 4350 mark.
BSE Midcap and Smallcap index outperformed the benchmark indices and closed up 0.6 per cent and 0.9 per cent respectively. Good buying was seen in metal and oil and gas stocks. IT, pharma and realty stocks are trading weak on the bourses.
Tata Steel was the star performer up over 8 per cent on strong consolidated Q1FY08 numbers. Its Q1FY08 sales were up at Rs 31,154.6 crore versus 5,747.7 crore.
Top gainers on the indices are Tata Steel up 8 per cent, BHEL up 2.5 per cent, ONGC up 2 per cent followed by Hindalco, Gasim, SAIL, HDFC Bank and ITC. Sensex was up 73.85 points or 0.50 per cent at 14993.04, and the Nifty up 38.60 points or 0.89 per cent at 4359.30.
About 1683 shares have advanced, 1250 shares declined, and 83 shares are unchanged. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,450.39 up 41 points or 0.6 per cent. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,874.22 up 66 points or 0.8 per cent.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1 per cent at 13,246.71. Triveni Engg, Gammon India, Praj Industries, Thermax, BHEL, SKF India closed higher. The BSE Health Care Index was down 0.2 per cent at 3,486.31. Dr Reddy's, Cipla were among the top losers.
The BSE Auto Index closed closed at 4,711.69 up 1 per cent. Hind Motors, Ashok Leyland, Escorts, Cummins, Amtek Auto ended higher. The BSE Metal Index closed at 11,203.77 up 4 per cent. Tata Steel, SAIL, Shree Precoated, Sterlite Ind, Jindal Steel, Sesa Goa advanced. The BSE FMCG Index gained 0.3 per cent at 1,936.32. Bata India, Dabur India, United Spirits, ITC, Britannia closed higher.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 7,936.51 up 1 per cent. GAIL, ONGC, BPCL, HPCL, Essar Oil ended in green. The BSE IT Index lost 1.2 per cent at 4,504.40. Satyam, HCL Tech, Infosys closed lower. The BSE Bankex was up 0.3 per cent at 7,652.78. Axis Bank, Bank of India, Federal Bank, SBI ended higher.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 10748.60 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 76510.22 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4798.99 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 92057.81 crore.
