New Delhi: The BSNL has a new year gift up its sleeves for its subscribers as it has announced a 28 per cent reduction in fixed line rentals to its 3.5 crore fixed line subscribers from the January 1.
The maximum fixed line rental has been fixed at Rs 180 as against Rs 250 for urban and Rs 210 in rural areas.
BSNL has retained free calls at 50 and tariff at Rs 1.20 for a three minute call, BSNL CMD AK Sinha said.
The state owned telecom major is experiencing a massive fall in landline subscriptions as more and more people move to mobile phones.
According to BSNL about 4 lakh lines were surrendered this year alone and the growth in the sector was at minus five till November this year.
In the mobile segment, BSNL joined the band of cellular operators offering lifetime validity on prepaid cards by launching a scheme for Rs 949 with a pre-loaded talk time of Rs 99.
For pre-paid subscribers, BSNL has fixed local call rates at Rs 1.60 a minute for calls from BSNL to BSNL network and Rs 2 a minute for call to others network.
STD call would cost Rs 2.40 for calls to BSNL network and Rs 2.99 to other operators' network, Sinha said.
He added that BSNL would take a revenue hit of about Rs 600 crore annually on account of reduction in the rentals for fixed line phones.
Earlier, other private operators like Bharti, Hutch, Reliance Infocomm, Idea, Tata and MTNL had launched their lifetime validity on pre-paid cards.
