New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has extended the last date for surrendering duplicate PAN cards to February 23 even as it detected some attempts at forging the cards.
The department said after the due date any person found to possess more than one PAN card would be liable to penal action.
A fine up to Rs 10,000 could be imposed on those having duplicate PAN cards after February 23, a Finance Ministry official said.
The Department has earlier asked duplicate PAN cardholders to surrender their duplicate number by December 31.
"This is a final call. After February 23, there will not be any further extension," the official said.
The extra PAN cards can be surrendered using the Help Desk set up in Income Tax offices, to the Assessing Officer (DCIT/ ACIT/ ITO) or the department's web-site or the 'Aayakar Sampark Kendra', an official release said.
Meanwhile, the Department detected cases of some persons getting PAN cards using forged documents in Mumbai and Chennai and reported the matter to the police authorities concerned, the release said.
