Durban: The Chairman of India's Tata group, Ratan Tata, is one of several international businessmen attending South Africa's International Investment Council's three-day meet at Magaliesburg, near Johannesburg.
In addition to Tata, other businessmen include Nail Fitzgerald of Reuters; Sam Jonah, Chairman of Anglo-Gold Ashanti; and Jurgen Schrempp, former chairman of Daimler Chrysler.
A spokesperson of South African President Thabo Mbeki, Murphy Morobe, said in a statement that the aim of the meeting was to assess the state of the "growing economy" and challenges posed by the high levels of unemployment and poverty.
"This is a regular meeting in which the President is advised on trends in the South African economy, development, ways in which the economy can grow, and the role of
information technology in economics. New initiatives are proposed and area's like business process outsourcing as an investment opportunity are also explored", he said.
He said President Mbeki would brief the investors about the specific interventions such as mobilisation of skills undertaken to help enhance economic growth and create jobs.
"These interventions include efforts to incorporate small and medium enterprises into the formal first economy", said Morobe.
The meeting would also discuss matters relating to domestic energy security and the state of the world trade talks in Geneva.
The meeting will end on Sunday.
