In a bid to protect crops and plants, domesticated, developed and harvested by indigenous people of Tamil Nadu, the Department of Botany of Thiagarajar College, Theppakulam organised an exhibition on heritage seeds and indigenous trees. This was held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the college. In the fast-paced world, where the dependency on artificial products is higher, traditional seeds are being destroyed.
The exhibition was organised by the college to raise awareness to protect the traditional seeds and native trees like kadambam. The event also saw a variety of vegetables, fruits and seeds of trees being sold. The seeds were preserved by the farmers of various districts who had more than a thousand different traditional seeds that they used for their agricultural purposes. In the exhibition, farmers sold these seeds to the public and students from many colleges in order to create awareness.
Besides seeds, the key chains made using palm leaves, baskets, pen stands and various plants were also sold in the exhibition. More than a thousand heirloom seeds were also showcased and were sold at reasonable prices. The visitors and fellow students in this exhibition displayed their eagerness to know more about the seeds and also bought them. The exhibition was conducted by Thiagarajah College Botany Department, with the help of Assistant Professor of Botany Department, Vellachamy Karthikeyan.
In a video from the exhibition, it can be seen that a significant number of visitors flocked in to take part as they actively attempted to buy and sell products in a view to promote the preservation of seeds and plants for a better environment.
Earlier this year, Thiagarajar College secured the 18th rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2023. The Union Ministry of Education announced the same and honoured the college on its achievement. It needs to be noted that the college has improved its ranking in the last few years. In 2017, the college stood at the 44th position.
