Abhishek Sharma Gets to Know About India Call-up in Middle of a T20 Game: 'Saw it on the Big Screen'

Abhishek Sharma was in the middle of a Sher-e-Punjab T20 match when the BCCI announced the Indian squad for the Zimbabwe tour which included the young batter. Following the announcement, the big screen at the stadium flashed the news that Abhishek would soon don the blue Indian jersey. That’s when the batter himself got to know about his call-up.

After Abhishek’s team [Agri Kings Knights] won the game, against Istersoft Titans, the young batter expressed his feeling about his achievement.

“As a youngster, it’s a dream come true for anyone who has been playing for so long and gets a call-up. So, I’m very happy. The ultimate goal has been obviously to represent the country.

“When I go back to all my hard and check the routines are being followed, and then I find that my name is there… so it makes me feel very happy,” Abhishek said at the post-match presentation.

“It’s just the start for me. The goal is more than that but right now, I’m very grateful.

“I saw it on the big screen. But I had an idea about it because as a cricketer you know it when you have been doing good. When you see yourself in the Indian team, it’s definitely a great moment,” he added.

Playing for SRH in IPL 2024, Abhishek recorded the fastest half-century in the franchise’s history in just 16 deliveries, against Mumbai Indians. He also struck 42 sixes, the most by any batter in IPL 2024, as he played a pivotal role in forming a lethal opening partnership with Travis Head at the top. While SRH finished as the IPL 2024 runners-up, Abhishek ended the season with 484 runs in 16 innings, including three half-centuries.

Abhishek was also the Player of the Tournament in Punjab’s triumph in the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He accumulated 485 runs in ten innings in the tournament.

The BCCI named Shubman Gill as the captain for the tour and handed maiden T20I call-ups to five players. Besides Abhishek, the likes of Riyan Parag, Tushar Deshpande, Dhruv Jurel and Nitish Reddy have been included in the new-look T20 side. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jasiwal, who are currently in the Caribbean, are the only two players included from the current World Cup squad.
