The ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was hit by a major controversy when Delhi Capitals’ Shai Hope took a contentious catch to dismiss Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson on Tuesday, May 7. Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody has now shared his views on the incident during an analytical discussion with official broadcasters Star Sports. Moody watched the catch from different angles and confirmed that Hope made no error while taking it. Samson, who had already completed his half-century in the high-scoring fixture, tried to clear the fence over the long-on region, picking up a short-length delivery off Mukesh Kumar. Hope made an outstanding effort and took a one-handed stunner. After the ball was grabbed, the West Indies cricketer tried his best to keep his feet away from the boundary rope.
The third umpire took some time to make his decision, which ultimately went in the favour of Delhi Capitals. Sanju Samson was evidently not happy with the judgment. He was spotted having a discussion with the on-field officials before leaving the field disappointedly. The incident triggered a huge buzz, with many debating whether Samson was out or not.
According to Tom Moody, the boundary cushion never moved when Shai Hope was completing the catch. He assessed the movement of the fielder from several angles and concluded that Hope’s feet were away from the line. “First thing, you look at the reaction of the fielder. He showed no evidence of guilt. Then you look at his feet. Yes, the right foot is close but then, you look at the cushion. That was clearly a catch as the foot didn’t make any contact with the boundary,” Moody was heard saying in a video shared by Star Sports on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu later addressed the topic and criticised the decision made by the third umpire. Sidhu felt that Shai Hope had touched the boundary rope twice with his feet. “There could be differences of opinion, but if you look at the side-on angle, it touches the boundary twice. It was pretty clear. Either you don’t use technology, or if you’re using it and the technology is making a mistake, it’s like there’s a fly in milk, and someone asks you to drink it,” Sidhu said on Star Sports as quoted by NDTV.

Sanju Samson’s dismissal was undoubtedly the turning point of the match which Delhi Capitals won by 20 runs. Samson scored a quickfire 86 off 46 balls, taking Rajasthan Royals close to the hefty target of 222 runs. The other batters, however, failed to provide the skipper with proper support during the chase.
