'Everything Aside, Family Comes First': Rohit Sharma on Ravichandran Ashwin's Sudden Withdrawal from 3rd Test vs ENG
Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma backed Ravi Ashwin's decision of withdrawing the squad in the 3rd Test at Rajkot and believes that 'family comes first.'

Despite the loss of Ravichandran Ashwin who was forced to leave the Indian squad mid-way through the third Test at Rajkot due to a ‘family medical emergency,’ Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was more than understanding of the circumstances that the bowler had despite his side being on the back foot in the match.

The hosts managed to step up their game to register a massive victory over England and take the series lead despite the loss of their ace spinner. But Rohit who had spoken at the press conference recognized that missing out on your best bowler was not an easy challenge to overcome.

“When you lose your most experienced bowler… especially in the middle of a Test match is not easy,” said the Indian captain.

The skipper was aware of the circumstances and mentioned that there were no other thoughts in their mind than for Ashwin to go back and be with his family during this situation.

“Everything was aside, family comes first. And when we heard the news, there was no second thought in our mind,” added Rohit Sharma.

The captain backed Ashwin’s decision to go back to be with his family during this tough period. He also added that any decision taken by the veteran spinner would have been backed the same as well.

“(We felt) he should do what he feels is right and he wanted to be with the family which is absolutely the right thing to do,” said the skipper.

Rohit also praised Ashwin’s team-first mentality to be able to return for the remainder of the Test and be part of the team as they went on to beat England by a big margin and take the lead in the five-match series. 2-1.

“Good on him to make his way and come here and be part of the team on this day. Shows the character and shows the kind of person he is… wanting to put everything ahead for the team.”

Despite Ashwin not playing a big part in the win at Rajkot, he was still able to chip in by picking up two wickets and scoring 37 runs in the match.
