With Babar Azam stepping down from captaining the side once again, it is suggested that Pakistan’s star batter decided to resign from the role after a report submitted by the white-ball Head Coach, Gary Kirsten to the national cricket board.
A report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), suggested that the star international batter was not pleased with the points mentioned in the report.
“Babar was not happy with the observations and recommendations of Kirsten and even assistant coach, Azhar Mahmood and felt he was solely being blamed for the disappointing performances,” one insider was quoted by PTI saying.
“He had indicated to the cricket board after some parts of Kirsten’s report became public that he was not interested in remaining captain,” he added.
It is also implied that he was also not pleased that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) did not show confidence or trust in his abilities despite his track record.
He also decided to step down from leading the national side after the PCB did not officially announce that he would be the captain of the 50-over side despite confirming that he would lead the T20 side prior to the T20 World Cup.
Kirsten’s report highlighted several points including that of the dressing room environment, the non-cooperation of certain players during their England tour and the T20 World Cup campaign as well.
The former South African international also weighed in his opinions on whether the 29-year-old was ready to take on the burdens of leadership in addition to his role as a lead batter of the side, since the massive criticisms he had received in the ODI World Cup.
As far as the PCB is concerned, they are not in a rush to announce a replacement. It is suggested that the board has told both Kirsten and the selectors to decide on the next person for the job after giving it much thought and debate.
“Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear he wants minutes of all official discussions by the selection committee that includes both foreign head coaches to be recorded so that a clear reason is on record for making the appointment,” he added.
